Rescued Magpie Becomes Lifelong Friend With The Family That Saved Her Life | Bored Panda

After being rescued and nursed back to health by a young family in Newport, Australia, a magpie named Penguin has become a regular visitor and friend at the Bloom family’s home, playing with them and coming in to hide when it rains.

Penguin was discovered flying on the ground near a library in 2013 by Noah, who is now 11. After being nursed back to health by husband and wife Cameron and Sam and their children (Reuben, 13, Noah, 11, Oli, 9), Penguin was allowed to fly free, but still returned often to spent time with the family. She plays catch, saunters through their home and even perches on their shoulders.

The bird waits for the family to leave their home before flying on her own way in the morning, and greets the kids when they get home from school; “It’s like a dog wagging its tail – she sits there in the tree and flaps her wings like she’s excited,” Noah’s father told ABC News.

Huh. People that aren't recruiters actually post updates on Linkedin.

Had reason to touch a xorg.conf today and realized how long it had been since even needing to think about that.

Oof. Lots to digest here, but a rather good post.

Replied to a post on werd.io :

I assume you've tried running without any addons and it still crashes? If not, worth a try, then add them back until you get crashing again.

Nicely done!

Cable companies don't want my money

2 min read

Just spent over an hour on the phone with various cable companies. I've had U-Verse for a little over a year on a "deal" price. The Internet isn't the fastest, but the cable selection and equipment is rather good and we've had zero issues during the year. When I signed up I was told, "oh don't worry, when the year is up you can call and get a new deal".  I called them last month, went into the "I'm leaving, lets make a deal queue".  Managed to work out a reasonable new offer/price.

Yesterday, I get a new bill....No change in price.

Call them back today, 5+ minute wait and finally make it back to the "lets make a deal" queue. No record of my last offer and no way to even come close to the same price! So, time to look at options.

Comcast has been sending nearly weekly offers in the mail to lure me back. The price isn't terrible and I know exactly what I'm getting into with them. I call the number on the offer.

  • First call. On hold for 5+ minutes, get a person with a headset so bad I can't understand what she says. I try to tough it out, but the call dropped for no reason.
  • Second call. 5+ minute wait. Get another person that I can understand. Start down the same, "what are my details" and call drops.
  • Third call. Another 5+ minute wait. Get a person I can understand, explain that this is the 3rd try and I'm getting annoyed. Manage to give her all my details and then ask about the offer I received in the mail. She has no clue, can't find anything about it. After a while, I give up, assuming maybe the offer isn't live yet in their system and will try again in a few days.

Second option. Wow!(/snicker... formerly Knology).

They don't offer any details on pricing on-line, so I call. Only took one call, but with a 15+ minute wait. Agent was helpful, but they just don't compete on speed, channel or tech. vs price.
